ATLAS - Residency in Taiwan

Sep 6, 2019

After Oxford, ATLAS is returning in residency, this time in Kaohsiung in Taiwan, thanks to the VR FILM LAB of the Kaohsiung Film Archive.

Taiwan is at the cutting-edge in terms of VR. It is on this island that HTC, the company behind the HTC Vive VR headset, is located, but it is also here that you can find creators like Huang Hsin-Chien (黃心健), author of the magnificent The Missing Body (VR), but also co-director of Chalk Room with Laurie Anderson (Best Virtual Reality Experience at the 74th Venice Film Festival)

Yann is on location for 3 months at Pier2 Art Center.

He will develop, among other things, Atlas new chapters for Oculus Quest.

The Oculus Quest is a VR device, which unlike the HTC Vive that we used until now, allows us to free ourselves from desktop computers.

We can thus multiply the devices (we aim for up to 15 simultaneous spectators), and make the transport and installation of Atlas easier.

During the first two weeks of residency, the focus is on the adaptation for Oculus Quest, as well as on the animation of a chapter inspired by Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities (We couldn't miss this reference in Atlas !).

This is the first time in Atlas that we have been working on typography, whereas it is a discipline that we are both passionate about.

We try here to create links between typography and maps.

Marie is preparing the future exhibitions in Rennes (FR) and Mons(BE) and is working on the creation of the Kaohsiung map as well as on new Asian inspired houses.

A first demo of Atlas was played at the Pier 2 Art Center on August 25, in Yann's studio, during the "Open Studio" days.

The residency space is shared with the talented Indian photographer Taha Ahmad.

On this occasion, the project was given a new Chinese name by the Kaohsiung Film Archive team:

It could be translated as “Life of Atlas”.

But it comes with multiple layers of meaning, Sheng (生) meaning “grow” or “come into existence” as well...

The Chinese language could find a special space in Atlas in future chapters, stay connected!
